Sexual orientation and the size of the anterior commissure in the human brain.

چکیده
The anterior commissure, a fiber tract that is larger in its midsagittal area in women than in men, was examined in 90 postmortem brains from homosexual men, heterosexual men, and heterosexual women. The midsagittal plane of the anterior commissure in homosexual men was 18% larger than in heterosexual women and 34% larger than in heterosexual men. This anatomical difference, which correlates with gender and sexual orientation, may, in part, underlie differences in cognitive function and cerebral lateralization among homosexual men, heterosexual men, and heterosexual women. Moreover, this finding of a difference in a structure not known to be related to reproductive functions supports the hypothesis that factors operating early in development differentiate sexually dimorphic structures and functions of the brain, including the anterior commissure and sexual orientation, in a global fashion.

Sexual function and orientation is a complex platform of human personality which is being modulated by several brain circuities which is less understood currently. Recently, several studies have demonstrated interesting results regarding the role of several brain locations in sexual behaviors and orientation. Sexual arousal in homosexual men are associated with activation of the left angular gy...
متن کاملDistance between Anterior Commissure and the First Tracheal Ring: An Important New Clinical Laryngotracheal Measurement
Introduction: The distance between the anterior commissure of the larynx and the first tracheal ring (AC.T. distance) is of great importance in laryngotracheal surgeries. The amount of narrowing of the subglottic airway is used as a quantitative mean to determine whether the lesion is subglottic or has extended to the trachea and therefore helps in the prediction of the final prognosis. متن کاملSexual orientation and brain structures: A critical review of recent research
This paper critically reviews three main studies that have sought to show that there are structural differences between the brains of male heterosexuals and homosexuals. These studies have focused on three regions of the brain, namely, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the third interstitial nucleus of the anterior hypothalamus (INAH-3) and the anterior commissure (AC). This paper exposes a nu...
متن کاملSexual orientation and its basis in brain structure and function.
C urrent evidence indicates that sexual differentiation of the human brain occurs during fetal and neonatal development and programs our gender identity— our feeling of being male or female and our sexual orientation as hetero-, homo-, or bisexual. This sexual differentiation process is accompanied by many structural and functional brain differences among these groups (1). In previous studies (...
متن کاملSex and species differences in mouse and rat forebrain commissures depend on the method of adjusting for brain size.
Sex differences in the forebrain commissures (corpus callosum, hippocampal commissure, and anterior commissure) were examined in B6D2F2 hybrid mice and Sprague-Dawley rats. Twenty-four male-female littermate pairs of mice were perfused at each of 21, 42 and 63 days of age and the midsagittal area of the commissures was measured from en bloc stained tissue. Twenty-two male-female littermate pair...
